Belarus' Sharakova claims first medal after serving doping ban

Belarusian track cyclist Tatiana Sharakova has won her first medal after serving an 18-month doping ban, BelTA has learned.

The member of the Minsk Cycling Club made a mark at the international competitions in Cottbuser, Germany (Cottbuser Nachte) where she claimed bronze in the omnium (a multiple race event). Tatiana Sharakova was fifth in a scratch race and third in an individual pursuit. The elimination race was her worst performance as the athlete finished 11th. It threw her back to the fifth position in the overall standings after three events. The next competition day was opened by the 500m time trial where the Belarusian showed the second best result and climbed up to the third position. She held the position, earning 188 points to collect a bronze medal.

Tatiana Sharakova has recently signed with the Minsk Cycling Club which was founded in September 2013. The Belarusian was disqualified by the International Cycling Union (UCI) on 18 months in 2013. Tatiana Sharakova failed the doping test at the 2012 UEC European Track Cycling Championships in Panevezys, Lithuania and the 2012 UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Glasgow, Scotland. The Belarusian athlete tested positive for a prohibited substance that was detected in a nasal spray she used to treat her chronic rheuma between competitions. Tatiana Sharakova lost the omnium gold and the 3km team pursuit bronze she won at the 2012 UEC European Track Cycling Championships in Panevezys.

Belarusians did not claim any more medals in Cottbuser. Vladislav Novik showed the best result in the sprint qualifications among Belarusians taking the 24th place. He showed his best time in this discipline (10.44) and set a new national record for 300m concrete tracks. Yevgeny Veremchuk and Artyom Zaitsev also improved their personal achievements showing 10.57 and 10.71 respectively. In the team sprint Belarusians clocked 1:03.2 to finish 9th among 14 teams.
